Moving and Handling

This course has been designed to give care workers an understanding of their legal responsibilities under the Manual Handling Operations 1992 and Health and safety at Work Act 1974.

The course covers the following topics:-

  • Back care awareness
  • Definition of top heavy and base movements
  • Reasons for back pain and injury
  • Types of accidents and injury
  • Prevention of back pain
  • Anatomy of the spine and its functions
  • Problem areas and how to overcome these
  • Moving and Handling Legislation
  • Unsafe lifting techniques
  • Practical activity
  • Practical exercises covering anything from standing transfers to hoisting techniques

The day course consists of 6 hours divided between theory and practical assessment. The course can be condensed to 3 hours depending on the practical activities. Assessment is through observation and oral questioning by the trainer assessing each individual learner.

The course can be adapted to suit the specific policies and practices within each organisation.
